Why Do My RV Tank Sensors Read Wrong?
RV tank sensors usually read wrong because waste and tissue coat the sensor probes, not because the sensors failed. Here's how to tell the difference and what actually fixes it.
Read the guideIf your RV air conditioner runs but blows warm air, the three most common causes are a failed start capacitor, coils clogged with dust and cottonwood, and low incoming voltage from the campground pedestal or an undersized extension cord. A capacitor is an inexpensive part and a fast repair. Low voltage is not a failure at all — it is your power supply, and running the unit that way will eventually destroy the compressor.
Do this before you assume anything is broken. RV air conditioners need roughly 115 volts to start properly. Campground pedestals sag badly during a Texas summer afternoon when every rig on the loop is running A/C, and an undersized or overly long extension cord makes it worse.
Below about 105 volts, the compressor struggles to start, draws excessive current, and heats up. Do this often enough and you will replace a compressor — which frequently costs more than the entire air conditioner is worth.
A plug-in voltage monitor at the pedestal costs very little and is one of the highest-value purchases an RV owner can make. If your voltage is low, shut the unit off. You are not being cautious, you are preventing an expensive failure.
The start capacitor stores the electrical charge needed to get the compressor and fan motors turning. They degrade with heat and age, and Texas summers age them fast.
Symptoms of a failing capacitor: the unit hums but does not start, the fan runs while the compressor never engages, it cools fine in the morning but quits in afternoon heat, or you hear a click followed by nothing.
This is a good-news repair. The part is inexpensive and replacement is typically under an hour. It is also genuinely dangerous to attempt yourself — capacitors hold a lethal charge even after the unit is unplugged, and they must be discharged correctly before handling.
An air conditioner works by moving heat outside. Block the airflow and it cannot do that, no matter how healthy the compressor is.
Return air filters should be cleaned monthly during use — most owners never touch them. The condenser coils on the roof collect dust, pollen, and cottonwood, and in Central Texas they clog faster than most people expect. Coils that look gray rather than metallic are choking the unit.
Cleaning coils and filters is legitimately DIY-able if you are comfortable on a roof and careful with the delicate fins. It is also the single most neglected piece of RV maintenance we see.

If voltage, capacitor, and airflow all check out, the likely candidates become a failing fan motor, a bad thermostat or control board, or a refrigerant leak. That last one matters: RV rooftop units are sealed systems and cannot be recharged the way an automotive A/C can. A refrigerant leak effectively means replacing the unit.
Any technician who offers to "top off the refrigerant" in a sealed rooftop RV air conditioner is telling you something about how they operate.
